In this post I'm going to talk about the less exciting part of website design - the technical mistakes. I know, it's boring, but the truth is if your site is slow or just too complicated to load, it’s like opening a store with a creaky door—customers just won’t come in. So how do you avoid these mistakes? Here are five common technical mistakes and how to fix them easily.
A Super Slow Website The Mistake You know the feeling: you visit a site, it loads... and loads... and loads... until you just close the tab. If your site is slow, imagine how many potential customers are doing exactly that. How to Avoid It Make sure your site loads fast! Heavy images? Compress them. Unnecessary plugins? Remove them. Wix has tools to help you check what’s slowing your site down, so you can fix it quickly.
Non-Optimized (Heavy) Images The Mistake You uploaded a stunning image of your office, but it’s 10MB in size, No wonder it takes forever to load. Heavy images slow down the site, and your customers? They’ll give up before the page finishes loading. How to Avoid It Before uploading an image, make sure it’s compressed and web-optimized. There are plenty of free tools online to help you shrink images without losing quality.
Proper Security (SSL)
The Mistake Ever visited a site and got the message "Connection not secure"? Chances are you closed it right away. If your site isn’t secure, it not only affects customer trust—Google will punish you, too.
How to Avoid It Wix has an option to enable SSL with the click of a button. Make sure your site is secure with an encrypted connection, so your customers feel safe browsing it.
Missing Backups
The Mistake
You built a stunning site, worked on it for hours, and then—oops! Something went wrong, and everything you built is gone. Now what? Without a backup, you’ll have to start from scratch.
How to Avoid It
Wix lets you save previous versions of your site with just a click. Make sure you regularly back up your site so you can revert to a previous version in case of an issue.
Inconsistent Fonts and Design
The Mistake Your site features five different font styles, every headline is a different size, and the pages look like three different people worked on them. It’s confusing and makes the site look unprofessional.
How to Avoid It Stick to two or three fonts that fit your brand and use them consistently. Ensure all pages are designed uniformly. This will project professionalism and help your customers feel confident they’re in the right place.
I know, technical mistakes might not be the most thrilling part of design, but they can significantly impact your site’s success so it's important to include them in the design process. Fixing issues like speed, security, and design consistency will ensure that your customers enjoy the experience and stay on your site. And if you need help, you know where I am!
